About me

Sergio Fajardo Villalobos

Sergio Fajardo Villalobos, veterinary ophthalmologist based on the island of Lanzarote.

Hello, my name is Sergio Fajardo Villalobos, I am originally from Lanzarote and specialised in veterinary ophthalmology.

Becoming a veterinarian has always been my big dream.

I still remember the day I decided to study Veterinary Medicine. It was in 1982 when my grandmother took me to the vet practice of José Leiva, veterinarian number 3 in the Province of Las Palmas. At that time, he was the official vet in Lanzarote.

As soon as we left his practice, I said to my grandmother: “Grandma, I want to be a vet.”

Since then, I never lost sight of this goal. I did whatever was necessary to study at the University of Córdoba and eventually matriculated at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

My career as a veterinarian

In 2006 I finished my studies in Cordoba. When I graduated, I decided to work with horses.

That is why I did an internship at the equine hospital in Aznalcóllar.

After finishing my internship, I decided to return to Lanzarote.

Back on the island, I set up a mobile clinic and treated horses and donkeys on Lanzarote.

After about two years, I felt the need to expand my knowledge.

For this reason, I started working at different veterinary clinics on the island, focusing on small animals.

After a while, I chose to take up a permanent position at Clinica Veterinaria Timanfaya, where I developed my interest in animal ophthalmology.

This led me to attend various training courses in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where I continued to learn more about this special field as well as about other specialities.

Besides Veterinary Ophthalmology, I am also fascinated by Veterinary Surgery.

Therefore, in 2016 I decided to do a postgraduate course in soft tissue surgery at Improve International in Madrid. Afterwards, I became the head of this speciality at the Clinica Veterinaria Timanfaya and of its emergency room.

Veterinary Opthalmology

I continued to be fascinated by veterinary ophthalmology.

In this field, you do not only need specific knowledge, but you also need very special instruments, as the eyes are a particularly sensitive organ. Instruments that no one in Lanzarote had at that time.

Many of the procedures and treatments that I offer here in Lanzarote today, had to be done on another island.

For all these reasons, I finally decided to enrol in the course for certified veterinary ophthalmology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in order to be able to offer special treatments for pet’s eye problems directly in Lanzarote.

Then, in November 2021, I became a member of the Spanish Association of Veterinary Ophthalmology (SEOVET).

In January 2022, I spent several traineeships at Centro Oftalvet in Gran Canaria, where I updated my knowledge in ophthalmology for animals.
